Project

Palchan - A Pahadi Experience

Location

Palchan, Manali, Himachal Pradesh

Area

Status

Proposed

Rising from the Himalayas, the Beas river branches through the site, within the village of Palchan. Cut across by the flowing water and with the Himalayan ranges as its backdrop, this terrain has a quieter picturesque landscape with restricted vehicular access. This allows for a great opportunity; to set up the retreat.

The essence of the land, also known as Devbhoomi embodies the site and embraces the design within its spectacular scenery. With Manali conveniently close by and the area facing snowy winters to evergreen summers; the location was both a challenge and a delight. This context became the canvas to orient the entire design. Our scope of work lies within capturing the view and creating an experience that amplifies this context while working with the geodesic units as part of the programmatic requirement.

The water divided our proposed project into two parts. By designing a path that connects these two parts, we allowed the design to meander along the project and break away into machans (decks) and a bridge that gives mesmerizing views of the site and surroundings.

The approach to the site is met with the first part of the project, which is a small island that has the capacity to hold impromptu mini gatherings, a place to start up a bonfire or even just allows the visitors to lounge around together with a hot cup of tea. A teepee (conical tent) acts as a shelter space that can further serve as a semi-covered activity space.

The path further leads into the second part of the design, that is, an amalgamation of units that are elevated from the ground. They derive a hierarchy based on the journey and experience of walking along the path; that now climbs along the topography, masterfully leading to each unit. This journey is a compilation of ever-changing tranquil views. The units are placed strategically to also afford a panoramic view towards the river and the mountains. Living amidst this serene beauty and having to walk along the dynamic path, is an adventure in itself.

The units are a series of shelters and geodesic domes that allows for efficient air circulation and an even temperature distribution within the structure. The visuals created by these designed modules give an interesting optical play within the flourishing landscape.

These fragments are strung along the path to cultivate a memorable experience. The organic softscape and the constant gush of water creates a unique experience that is in harmony with the context of living within the mountains. The design adds on to this pahadi experience with minimal intervention.
